“Dear God, Don’t do That…”

Written by: Rene

I wanted to share a little behind-the-scenes of the “Dear God, don’t do that…” series—because while it’s meant to be a bit of comedic relief, it also highlights some mindset gaps that I keep coming across, and I think they’re important to talk about.

As I’ve said before, I love a deep dive. I spend a lot of time scrolling through listings and reading through forums from other hosts and landlords. I kept seeing the same thing—people frustrated that their listings weren’t getting booked, often blaming the platform.
They would link their listing and it would be dark photos, unmade beds, dishes in the sink, or old (and visibly stained) furniture. The kind of photos that honestly just make you feel a little… gross inside.

Another thing I saw, when someone asked what updates they should make to improve their property, the overwhelming response was: “Don’t do anything. It’s just a rental.”

And to me, the logic just doesn’t track.
I think a lot of people have good intentions, but they don’t always realize what’s actually holding their listing back or why they’re not attracting the type of tenant they want. I mean, if your goal is to attract a group of frat guys looking for a party house… then honestly, you might be on the right track.

However, if you’re trying to attract a corporate rental, an insurance placement, a relocating family, or a travel nurse, then a little effort goes a long way.

That’s really why I started this series. Not to call people out, but to start shifting the mindset. Because small changes—both in how you think about your property and how you present it—can make a huge difference. If you haven't already, check out Episode 1.

Here’s to better furnished midterm rentals… and a little humor along the way.
