Don't Lose the Joy

Written by: Rene

As the renovation moves along, I’m narrowing in on the design selections: tile, hardware, flooring, door styles, trim, paint colors, OH MY! Many these foundational details get overlooked when people think about designing and furnishing a property.

The reality is that every decision comes with hundreds, if not thousands, of options. Many of the differences seem small, but together they create the overall feel of a home.

Take something as (seemingly) simple as a door. Do you choose six panels, two panels, one panel, or none at all? What style of molding goes on the door? What trim surrounds the frame? Which finish do you want for the hinges and doorknobs? What style of hardware fits the look you're after? Should the doors be painted to match the trim or stand out as their own feature?

For midterm rentals, budget is always an important factor, but creating a successful rental isn't just about choosing the least expensive option. It's about being intentional—selecting materials and finishes that can stand up to everyday use while still creating a space that feels elevated, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed. Durability and a touch of luxury can absolutely coexist, and finding that balance is often where the magic happens.

It's easy to get lost in the endless decisions and let them steal the joy from the process. If you're in the thick of it too, don't be afraid to ask for help. A trusted friend, family member, or interior decorator can help pull you out of the weeds, give you perspective, and remind you why you were excited about the project in the first place.

I’m so glad you found your way to this little corner of the hosting world. Here’s to better furnished midterm rentals… and a finding the joy in each decision.
